Vodafone and Amazon Forge Satellite Deal to Expand 4G/5G Coverage in Remote Regions
Vodafone Group has inked a strategic partnership with Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network, Project Kuiper, to deliver backhaul connectivity for mobile masts across Europe and Africa. The agreement eliminates infrastructure bottlenecks in hard-to-reach areas where terrestrial fiber deployment proves economically unviable.
Amazon's LEO constellation will provide gigabit-speed links to Vodafone's remote base stations, enabling 4G/5G service rollout without costly ground installations. Initial deployments will commence in Germany during 2026 before expanding through Vodacom's African footprint.
The satellite solution offers asymmetric bandwidth capabilities—1 Gbps downlink and 400 Mbps uplink—comparable to terrestrial alternatives. With over 200 operational satellites and hundreds more awaiting launch, Amazon's space-based infrastructure demonstrates the viability of LEO networks for mainstream telecom applications.
